Cultural exchange between youth centers, their cities and the neighborhood
Design for Kids, Traveling, Accommodation Facilities.
What was my role? conducting field research, conducting co-design session, developing the service concept
Who was our client? CAG Lambrateam is a youth center based in Lambrate, Milan. We carried out an extensive research to know the pain points of youngsters associated with CAG Lambrate.
What we did? In this project, we were asked to carry out an extensive research to understand the context, reframe the vision of the administration, and propose possible strategies to achieve it.
What was the impact? This project is not launched because it was a part of a university project, but for the impacts we have aimed for connection to the neighborhood and other youth centers, exposure to different cultures and collective growth.
In order to better understand the context, my team and I conducted a field research on the building and the spaces.
The centre is located within a municipal complex with a gymnasium, Steinerian school, social services and CAF.
The CAG is located above the gymnasium and next to the Steinerian school, the building is characterized by small windows.
There are wheelchair accessibility systems externally and internally, although internal spaces are small and make transit difficult
The center benefits from a garden in the municipal complex for outdoor and recreational activities, when available
Inside, the center is colorful and lively, the walls are full of drawings, calendars, maps and posters that are used during educational and recreational activities. Lambrateam is organized into five spaces, each used for different purposes.
1. Entrance: the main room, characterized by a large table, foosball table and the presence of a snack corner, is used as a reception and meeting room.
2. Toilet: divided into males and females
3. Terrace: large terrace used in summer, featuring a large mural created by the children during the 'Free of Rumors' activity
4. Study room: a study room with a bookcase and a computer workstation for playing video games
5. Relax room: room used for recreational activities, containing a sofa and table tennis
After conducting the secondary and primary research, we extracted these three main problems to address.
CAG Lambrateam potential is unknown in its neighbourhood and youngsters within CAG lack social connection.
Youngsters were found to be fond of travel and exploration. However, they do not get opportunity to travel often.
Youngsters in CAG lambrate feel restricted due to CAG’s small space and limited resources.
We decided to conduct a co-design session with students coming to the center in order to understand how to transform the center to a place for the community. Here are some of the insights from the session:
Hidden Gems of the City
Culture is not about getting to know typical places but the people and their daily lives, the hidden gems of the city and the neighborhood.
Door to Culture
The activity they consider most valuable is eating together, as food is a “door to culture”.
Organization of the activities
The coordinator of the activities, for recreational ones it is the youngsters, for cultural ones both them and the educators.
Cooperation with Educators
Important role of cooperation between educators and youngsters, “the educators must have fun too”.
Based on the insights from the co-design session, my team and I made this offering map. Offering maps are used to discuss and communicate what is the service about.
