Unconventional passive room dehumidifier designed for energy-poor circumstances.
Energy Poverty, Dehumidifier, Slow Design.
What was my role? context research, ideation, concept development, service design.
What was the problem? The coming decades will seriously challenge the well-being and survival of what are now cities inhabited by millions of people. Surface warming is causing a faster increase in humidity, since warm air holds more water vapor that warming seas and land surfaces give up into the atmosphere through evaporation.
What we did? In this project, we were asked to design a product-service to address energy poverty.
At the end? This project was exhibited in the exhibition "Design for Evolving Scenario" in ADI design museum.
The coming decades will seriously challenge the well-being and survival of what are now cities inhabited by millions of people.
Not only will today’s warmest territories become increasingly inhospitable, but even the Mediterranean basin itself will be affected by climate change to the point of resembling the Persian Gulf, Pakistan and Thailand.
Iteration #1:
Turn humidity into usable water!
Passive dehumidifier for humid environments, to be used in highly dense places that can not benefit from natural light. The mesh structure absorbs water, and lets the water slide down, allowing for the environment to be less humid.
Iteration #2:
Grow your plants by absorbing water from the humidity in the air.
Activated charcoal, removes odors and controls humidity from the surrounding environment. It then turns the absorbed humidity into water, where people can grow their upside-down plants.
Iteration #3:
Loomidity!

Service goal: to minimize inconvenient humidity levels due to climate change. Our service enriches the experience and improves the health of people and the house itself.
Service target: those challenged by structural, economical, and health consequences of non-livable humidity levels, with the desire to maximize their living comfort and health of the building while minimizing energy use.
