City tours based on stories of migrants and homeless people for middle school students
One-stop-shop, City Tours, Educational Design, Design Against Marginalization
What was My role? I was the team coordinator (aligning the team members with each other, setting deadlines, etc.) and researcher (conducting interviews and co-designs, extracting insights and proposing possible strategies).
Who was our client? The Sammartini Centre, located in the Milano Centrale area, gives an initial welcome, every day, to immigrant and homeless people seeking information and relocating them to the various facilities in the area.
The center works alongside multiple services offering services to homeless and immigrants, creating a one-stop-shop model.
What was the problem? The presence of multiple services catering to vulnerable people has created problems such as ghettoization and marginalization.
What we did? In this project, we were asked to identify the problem, frame it, and propose possible strategies to address it.
What was the impact? This project is not launched yet but we have aimed for Hosting 10 Sammartour (school city tour) per month, and 500 self-guided city tours per month.
During the first interview with the center, issues related to neighborhood were raised, that's why we decided to map the neighborhood.
#1 The area close to Stazione Centrale is full of tourists, with many shops and restaurants to explore.
#2 The first part of Via Sammartini appears to be an urban revitalization initiative alongside the involvement of local businesses.
#3 The final part of Via Sammartini has a sense of neglect that pervades the surroundings, dirtiness and inadequate maintenance, accompanied by long queues.
Conducting a focus group with the staff of Sammartini, due to feasability issues, we decided to follow the second path: The identity of Sammartini Center with the residents of the neighborhood.
We decided to conduct a co-design session with residents in order to understand how to communicate the identity of the center. Here are some of the insights from the session:
Lack of Initiatives Aimed at Families: There is a shortage of initiatives catering to families in the neighborhood, and newcomers often look for other families to inquire about neighborhood safety.
Social Pressure on Residents with Migrant Roots: The neighborhood exhibits a discernible social pressure on residents with migrant roots, particularly due to the presence of immigrants who may not maintain a tidy environment.
Racial Bullying: Instances of bullying targeting non-Italian individuals have been reported in the neighborhood.
The service has three main offerings, each associated with some secondary offerings. To learn more about the details of the service, you can check the offerings on the like below:Service offerings in more details
The centre currently holds sessions in high schools to raise awareness about the issue of poverty.
The center will open its door to local schools to provide spaces and opportunities to initiate city tours and workshopes for school students.
In the future, initiating family tours will promote engagement within the local community and businesses, with Sammartini center.
Leveraging on the resources gained from the collaboration with businesses, the centre will be ready to launch the Sammartini Intercultural Hub.
Finally, to track progress, create alignment, and encourage engagement around measurable goals, we decided to use OKRs.
Objective 1:
Introduce the identity of Sammartini Center to the residents of the neighborhood.
Key Results 1:
Host 10 Sammartour (school city tour) per month.
Contact three new schools each month.
Objective 2:
Bring people near the center, in order to prepare the neighborhood for launching the community center.
Key Results 2:
Reach the number of self-guided city tours by 500 per month by next year.
Grow the number of visitors passing by the center by 30% by next quarter.
